Han GROOT (1921 – 2009)
Han Groot learned the trade of advertising artist at the Enschedé printing house in Haarlem, where he started at the age of fifteen. After his career as a graphic designer, he took painting lessons in the workshop of the Van Gogh Museum. He painted landscapes, boats, and nudes, among other subjects. During his travels, he made sketches that served as the starting point for his work. Characteristic of his working method was his series approach: he revisited the same subject and simplified the representation increasingly, causing his paintings to gradually become more abstract. He worked for many years from the area around Augsbuurt in Friesland.
