After his education at the Institute for Applied Arts Education, De Jong established himself as an independent ceramist in Amsterdam. He successively had a studio in Laren, West-Beemster, Oegstgeest and Rheden.
Humor and craftsmanship go hand in hand at Hans de Jong. Without concern for functional functions, he sculpts fantasy beasts and playful figures from clay with names such as Crybaby, Flying Fox, Flatlander and His Transparency. His figurative sculptures, but also his vases and pots offer, as he puts it himself, 'the luxury of the strictly superfluous'. You can hardly do anything with it but put it down and look at it - there is plenty to see in the layering of the skin and the graphic details.
