Dom Hans van der LAAN (Leiden 1904 – Mamelis 1991)
Dom Hans van der Laan was a Dutch architect, furniture designer, architectural theorist, and Benedictine monk. He was closely associated with the Bossche School and developed the so-called plastic number, a system of proportions for architecture and design. In addition to buildings, Van der Laan designed furniture, liturgical objects, and other utilitarian items. Among his most important architectural projects are the Abbey of Saint Benedict in Mamelis near Vaals and Roosenberg Abbey in Waasmunster. His designs are characterized by a consistent application of proportions, in which architecture, interior, and furniture were approached as a single entity. He documented his theories in works such as De Architectonische Ruimte (The Architectural Space) from 1977.
