Herman Miller (1905)

HERMAN MILLER ((Zeeland, Michigan, 1905)

Herman Miller was founded in 1905 under the name Star Furniture Co. In 1919, the company was renamed Michigan Star Furniture Co. under the then-director Dirk Jan DePree. DePree and his father-in-law, Herman Miller (Harm Mulder), acquired the majority of the shares in the company in 1923 and renamed it the Herman Miller Furniture Company. HERMAN MILLER (Zeeland, Michigan, founded 1905)

Under the influence of designer Gilbert Rohde, production shifted from traditional furniture to modernist designs in the 1930s. From 1945, George Nelson helped determine the direction as design director, followed by collaborations with Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi, and Alexander Girard, among others. Characteristic features include experiments with molded plywood, fiberglass-reinforced plastic, and aluminum. The company played a significant role in post-war American furniture design and the development of modular office furnishings.
