Jan Rijckoort (1889 -1940 )

Painter

Jan RIJCKOORT (Harelbeke 1889 – Abbeville 1940)

Jan Rijckoort was a Belgian painter who specialized in seascapes. Before working as a painter, he was a factory worker, a professional soldier, and an employee of the Belgian railways. During the First World War, he was seriously wounded. As a result, he had to give up his job with the railways. He settled with his family in Lombardsijde and began painting to support themselves. In 1936, he moved to Sint-Andries near Bruges. He was arrested in May 1940 and transferred to France, where he was shot dead in Abbeville on May 20.
