Johan van Loon (1934-2020)

Johan van Loon (1934 -2020 )

Designer, glass artist, Ceramist

Johan van LOON (Rotterdam 1934 – Breda 2020)

Johan van Loon was a ceramist and textile artist; Johan van Loon studied textile design at the Institute for Applied Arts Education (the later Gerrit Rietveld Academy) in Amsterdam from 1952 to 1956 and continued his education from 1957 to 1960 at the Konstfack Skolan in Stockholm under Stig Lindberg.

Johan van Loon began working intensively with ceramics in the 1960s and developed a highly distinctive visual language, in which his background in textiles remains visible in the way he folds, stacks, and builds clay into architectural, organic, and sometimes almost textile-like structures, often with a rich and experimental glaze.

Johan van Loon taught ceramics and textiles for a long time at academies in Breda, 's-Hertogenbosch, and Amsterdam, and collaborated with Rosenthal and the European Ceramic Work Centre, among others.
