Marcel Janco (Bucharest 1895 – Tel Aviv 1984)
Romanian-born Israeli painter and architect. One of the founders of Dadaism. He was friends with his compatriot, the poet Tristan Tzara, and in 1916, along with Tzara, Hugo Ball, Hans Arp and others, he was one of the founders of Dadaism in the Cabaret Voltaire café in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1922 he returned to Romania, where he worked as an architect and painter.
In 1941 Janco fled the rising anti-Semitism and National Socialism to the Mandate Palestine. In 1953 he founded an artist community in the village of Ein Hod close to Haifa. Conquered by the Israeli army on July 16, 1948, the Palestinian population was ethnically cleansed. However, the picturesque village was left intact. But the mosque had become the Bonanza coffee bar. Towards the end of his life he was involved in the establishment of a Dada museum in Ein Hod, the Janco Dada Museum. The museum houses Janco's work, shows the history of Dadaism and organizes temporary exhibitions.
