Ori Ben-Zeef (1949)
Ori BEN-ZEEF (Jerusalem 1949)
Ori Ben-Zeëf is originally from Israel, which is reflected in his working method, among other things, in his penetrating use of colour and characteristic formal language. Ori Ben-Zeëf's works are, in an 'expressive' style, constructed from conflicting visual elements, without one point of view dominating the image plane. Sometimes a portrait of Mickey Mouse appears in his work, for Ben Zeëv the symbol of the American culture of prosperity. In contrast, he paints a Russian sickle, for example, or quotes Karl Marx.
The work of Ori Ben-Zeëf compels one to think and attempts to make the viewer take a position, while he himself adopts a completely neutral position.
The paintings are arenas for constant struggle and relativization, without the artist losing the overview of events. He remains the director of the game in which the players follow his instructions and in which the set pieces are placed exactly where the artist wanted them. This means that these paintings, despite all fragmentation, still produce one image and not a splintered quantity of separate considerations.
Ori Ben-Zeëf studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and lives and works in The Hague.
