Otto van Rees (Freiburg 1884 - Utrecht 1957)
Otto van Rees was a Dutch painter. He grew up in an intellectual socialist environment and at home met many intellectuals of different fields. Van Rees was self-taught, but also received painting lessons from Jan Toorop and Herman Heijenbrock. He later went to live and work with his wife in the painters' colonies of Blaricum and Domburg. In the latter place he worked in a luministic style. As a self-taught artist, he broke free from traditional art ideas more easily than trained artists. On Toorop's advice, Van Rees left for Paris after the summer of 1904, where he met Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and befriended Kees van Dongen and his family. Van Rees's painting style changed over the years, from neo-impressionist to more abstract. He was influenced by Fauvism and Cubism and joined the Dada movement. Van Rees has been important to Dutch art through his extensive network, which resulted in new influences and perspectives. He linked art to other intellectual disciplines.
