Pastoe (1913)
PASTOE (Formerly UMS-Pastoe) Since 1913.
UMS-Pastoe originated from the furniture workshop of Frits Loeb, who wanted to take control of the production process of furniture for his inherited shop in Utrecht. From the 1920s, UMS-Pastoe was one of the most important manufacturers of furniture for the middle class in the Netherlands. The designs were initially supplied by the manager DL Braakman, who took into account the possibility of large-scale production. In terms of style, the designs matched the times. But UMS-Pastoe also tried to introduce more modern furniture, which was not at all to the liking of the public. In the 1930s, the factory tried again, this time working with outside furniture designers. In 1932, a series of steel furniture from HF Mertens came onto the market. Later on, UMS-Pastoe was influenced by H. Wouda and designs from France and Scandinavia.
After the Second World War, the company had to start again, this time under the Pastoe brand. It was successful with the designs of C. Braakman. Another crisis followed in the 1970s, after which work was resumed with outside designers. The goal of UMS-Pastoe has always been to produce flexible and user-friendly furniture.
