Pieter Engels did everything in his own way. In the early 1960s he had himself fitted into a smart suit and went to a number of Amsterdam galleries. With a nice talk he arranged exhibitions for himself. In 1964 he founded his own company: EPO (English Product Organization). He also created an alter ego (Simon Es) under which he devised promotional campaigns and wrote slick advertising texts. Other companies came later.
Pieter Engels first made paintings, but eventually he felt that not enough people were paying attention to them. He was also a bit fed up with it himself. There was then a change in Engels' work. He worked with new materials such as formica, aluminum and plastic and thus attracted the attention of the media. This resulted in a lot of contradictory and idea-rich work.
A well-known theme of Pieter Engels is destruction. This is clearly evident in his series Bad constructed canvas. This shows paintings with sagging and unusable canvases.
