Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006)

Designer

Timo Sarpaneva (1926 - 2006)

As a young student, Timo Sarpaneva was educated in Helsinki. In 1950 he became a product designer and head of the Karhula-Iittala exhibitions. For a short period he worked as a textile designer, but it was his glassware that made him famous. A new technique he introduced was the steam blowing method. This technique was applied to the Kajakki series in 1953. In the 1950s Sarpaneva introduced his industrially manufactured I-glass series. He wanted to build a bridge between expensive glass art and utility glass. Another technique that Sarpaneva developed can be seen in his popular 1964 series Finlandia and Festivo. A wooden mold is used to leave a shape in the glass. Each object is unique because the wooden mold goes along with the combustion and therefore changes shape more and more. Later metal molds were used for this. In 1978 Sarpaneva designed the Arkipelago series where bubbles were trapped in the glass. He experimented with this and made various variations. In addition to glassware, Sarpaneva also made ceramics for Rosenthal and worked for many other companies.
