Chris LANOOY (Saint Annaland 1881 - Epe 1948)
Experimented with glass and clay in his father's forge. Because of his talent for drawing, he started in 1896 as an apprentice painter at Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg in The Hague. In the evenings he took drawing lessons there at the Royal Academy of Art. After his departure from Rozenburg in 1897 he worked as a painter in Germany and as a pottery painter at Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland in Gouda. Inspired by that environment, he decided to also learn to work with ceramics. In 1906 Lanooij continued this at Plateelbakkerij Haga. After the bankruptcy of the factory, he decided to start his own business. He built an oven, plaster room and laboratory for making glazes himself. In 1920 his family was forced to move to Epe due to health problems, where he built his new workshops. During the Second World War Lanooij ended up in Kamp Amersfoort, where his diabetes ensured that he eventually survived the war. After the war he resumed his work until his death in 1948.
Lanooij gained international fame through his participation in foreign exhibitions and competitions. His oeuvre consists of all kinds of decorative designs, utensils and ornaments, not only for ceramics, but also for textiles.
