Ek van ZANTEN (Zaltbommel 1933)
From the age of fifteen, Van Zanten was educated at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he was taught by Piet Esser, among others. One of his classmates was Jan Wolkers. In 1953 he was awarded a scholarship for further studies at the Ecole Nationale d'Architecture et des Arts Décoratifs (Higher School of Visual Arts) in Brussels. He won the Prix de Rome, which enabled him to work in Rome for two years. Back in the Netherlands he initially lived in Amsterdam and from 1961 in Naarden. In addition to his work as a sculptor, Van Zanten from 1971 to 1988 was a part-time teacher at the Minerva Academy in the city of Groningen.
Van Zanten mainly made figurative bronze sculptures. In recent years, the big work has become too heavy for him and he mainly focuses on (portrait) drawing.
