Selma Verhoeven Magré (Dordrecht, 1950) Studied at the KABK in The Hague and at various institutions in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the Jan van Eijck Academy in Maastricht and the higher institute in Antwerp. She also spent some time in Florence. She lived and worked in The Hague for many years. She is an 'all round' visual artist who alternately makes paintings on canvas and on panel, etchings, drawings with ink, chalk, gouache, watercolor or a combination of these. The works are characterized by an emptiness, stillness, alienation and dreaminess. Light plays a very important role in Selma's work. Despite the figuration, a lot of work cannot be accurately interpreted due to the layering that is involved. The works have multiple levels and depths. Some works have something symbolic and stand for something else.
