Nieuwe Groep

Founded in 1945 - dissolved in 1953

The New Group

De Nieuwe Groep was an artists' collective that mainly consisted of painters. De Nieuwe Groep was based in Twente, which arose out of dissatisfaction with the Twente art circle, which was seen by many younger artists as dictatorial, elitist and conservative. During the Second World War, many artists went into hiding in Twente, where the idea arose to set up a new, modern group. This also happened the same year that the war was over. They wanted to create a favorable climate for contemporary art in the east of the Netherlands. This was mainly done through exhibitions. The New Group played a major role in introducing modern painting to the east of the country.
