This work comes from the '20 Contemporary Dutch Artists' box published in 1982 by GIN Gallery in Amsterdam.
Alphons Freymuth (Haarlem, 1940)
Alphons Freijmuth (also known as Freymuth) studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 1963 to 1964. In 1965, he had his first solo exhibition at Galerie 845 in Amsterdam. From 1974, he taught at the Academy of Art and Industry (AKI) in Enschede. Freijmuth primarily works as a painter, but since the early 1980s he also began creating sculptures. Freijmuth spent a lot of time with Reinier Lucassen. The two painters, both admirers of the work of René Magritte, influenced each other and sometimes created paintings with the same subject or variations on or of each other's work. His work is considered part of the New Figuration movement, of which he was one of the founders. He has a wild, abstract expressionist style, with bright colors. Yet his work also contains elements of De Stijl (Freijmuth frequently refers to Piet Mondrian, as in "Rendez-vous met PM" from 1991) and Constructivism (for example, "Constructivism with Beam and Branch" from 1986/87). His subjects are usually figures, nudes, and portraits. Freijmuth lives and works in Amsterdam. His work is held in museum collections including those of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, the Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo, and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem.
