Bas Meerman (Hilversum, 1970) studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam from 1989 to 1993 and now lives and works in Berlin. He could no longer paint in Amsterdam because of all the attention, so he now lives in the German capital. He finds it a harder city than Amsterdam. Perhaps his work has become harder as a result. Meerman paints and draws to escape the fundamental loneliness of life. His work is about sensual love. Meerman is renowned for his linework, which allows the viewer to experience both confrontational and intimate scenes. The diary is the common thread running through Meerman's entire oeuvre. It connects the final paintings with the preceding drawings. Meerman's works often contain an intimate and erotic charge, ranging from showering people in lingerie and masturbating men to women with flowers or flowers as the main subject.
