  • Born: Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk
  • Education: Van Schaijk Painting and Decoration Studio, The Hague
  • Bram van Velde (1895–1981) was a Dutch artist who spent most of his life abroad. After his father left the family, the young Van Velde had to start working early to support his family. At the age of twelve, he copied artworks by old masters and decorated furniture and lampshades at the Van Schaijk painting and decoration studio in The Hague. His employer recognized his talent and encouraged him to develop further. Consequently, in the early 1920s, he traveled to the Worpswede artists' colony in Germany. There he created a number of Expressionist works and his first lithograph. In 1924, he went to Paris with his brother. In this city, his painting career increasingly took shape. After Paris, he moved to Corsica. This French island became a major source of inspiration for his still lifes.

After the Second World War, the first solo exhibition of Van Velde's work was organized. However, it would take years before the painter received appreciation for his work. In the 1960s, he achieved some success with his lithographs and painting, but it was not until the 1970s that he was invited to participate in an increasing number of exhibitions. Van Velde worked in a lyrical abstract style and is also classified as part of Tachism (the French version of American Abstract Expressionism). He makes use of strongly contrasting colors with which he imbues his works with a certain tension and emotionality.
The work of Bram van Velde can be seen in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Musée Cantini in Marseille, the Musee Jenich in Vevey (Switzerland), and the Tate Gallery in London, among others.
