The painter Cornelis de Bruin lived and worked primarily in Amsterdam and, until around 1923, in Baarn. He was a student at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and primarily painted and drew landscapes (mostly of the Gooi region), sometimes with figures in the style of the Hague School. He was praised for his distinctive use of many shades of gray. He also worked as a pottery painter at "De Distel" in Amsterdam and the "Dordtsche Kunstpotterij" in Dordrecht. Cornelis de Bruin died on August 27, 1940, in Amsterdam.
