Dirk Harting (1884-1970) was almost exclusively a graphic artist and skilled etcher.
He also engraved stamps and bookplates, made lithographs and drawings and occasionally watercolors as well as oil paintings. Harting reached great heights in the Dutch graphic tradition. His adage was: “I want an etching to indeed be a print and not a disguised painting or the imitation of a watercolor.” His etchings show us the artistry of the craft itself, his personal vision of reality. Harting received the Willink van Collen Prize in 1913 for the etching of the Grimnessersluis in Amsterdam near the Rokin. Five years later he acquired a silver medal from the city of Utrecht for his well-known etching of the Amerfoorte Church of Our Lady.
He was a student of Pieter Dupont and Willem Witsen.
