This drawing depicts a tranquil cityscape full of subtle movement. Figures walk past each other, next to a canal with reflective water. The work beautifully captures the contrast between haste and contemplation: people moving with the rhythm of the city, yet simultaneously seem lost in their own thoughts.
The work was created by Egbert Schaap (1862–1939), a Dutch artist from Nigtevecht. He trained at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and the Rijksnormaalschool for Art Teachers in Amsterdam. Throughout his life, he lived and worked in Vreeland, Amsterdam, Kortenhoef, 's-Graveland, and Ankeveen, among other places.
Schaap was best known for his landscapes and cityscapes, in which he captured the Dutch landscape with a keen eye for atmosphere and detail. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam owns several of his paintings and nearly fifty of his drawings.
The work can be viewed in our gallery. Art Dumay also has a framing workshop (this year celebrating its 85th anniversary) and a restoration studio. If you'd like to use these facilities, please let us know.
Viewing is always possible. It is always possible to collect your purchased artwork in Nuenen. Framed artworks are sent by courier, according to the rates below.
