At first glance, this etching depicts an everyday street scene. But is it really so ordinary? The little boy looking back at us arouses curiosity—what's going on in his mind, and why does he seek contact with the viewer? The hundreds of fine lines that compose the work create an intriguing and layered image that invites us to look longer.
The work was created by Egbert Schaap (1862–1939), a Dutch artist from Nigtevecht. He trained at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and the Rijksnormaalschool for Art Teachers in Amsterdam. Throughout his life, he lived and worked in Vreeland, Amsterdam, Kortenhoef, 's-Graveland, and Ankeveen, among other places.
Schaap was best known for his landscapes and cityscapes, in which he captured the Dutch landscape with a keen eye for atmosphere and detail. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam owns several of his paintings and nearly fifty of his drawings.
The work can be viewed in our gallery. Art Dumay also has a framing workshop (this year celebrating its 85th anniversary) and a restoration studio. If you'd like to use these facilities, please let us know.
