Archival documents in the RKD collection show that Eugene Brands' artistic career progressed successfully. To the art critic W. Jos. In 1952, he wrote a letter to de Gruyter thanking him for the fact that his painting *Promenade in the Village* was sold at an exhibition in Pittsburgh partly thanks to his efforts. In 1976, Galerie Nouvelles Images gave Brands ample opportunity to show his new work: large canvases with abstracted, colorful landscape patterns in which the black spots of cows are strikingly incorporated. They date from the period when he moved to Hulshorst, near Nunspeet. In the large studio in the woods, he experienced the silence of nature and the connection with the cosmos more intensely than in the city. A journalist from *Het Parool* noted during a visit to the artist in 1979: ‘Eugène Brands (66) has lived with his wife Toos in Nunspeet since 1975. His house is well hidden among the woods, barely accessible by car. In the living room, a large painting of himself, several incredibly fine pieces of art by so-called primitive peoples, and an impressive collection of gramophone records.’ In 1999, Brands moved into a studio in the South of France and gave up his residence in Hulshorst. However, in 2002, he died in his birthplace, Amsterdam—on his birthday, of all days. Brands did not believe in coincidence but saw meaning in everything, as he declared even at a young age.
If you'd like to view the artworks we offer before the auction ends, you're welcome to visit our shop in Purmerend. Please send us a message or email in advance to schedule an appointment. After the auction, you can choose from various shipping (PostNL), delivery (Swift or our own courier), and/or pickup options (depending on the size and fragility of the item).
