This oil portrait was painted by Evert Rabbers (1875–1967), born in Woolde near Hengelo. From a young age, he displayed a remarkable talent for drawing, which he further developed during his secondary school years under the guidance of drawing teacher J.H. Weijns. On the advice of several painters, including Max Liebermann, Rabbers left for The Hague after secondary school, where he worked for court photographer Ziegler and came into contact with well-known artists. Through Liebermann, he met the painter B.J. Blommers, who gave him valuable guidance and taught him the basics of the craft. This also introduced Rabbers to Jozef Israëls. After his time in The Hague, he settled in Enschede, where he devoted himself entirely to painting. He continued his education through correspondence with Blommers and a course at the Amsterdam drawing school ABC, which strongly influenced his further development as an artist.
