Artist: Fon Klement (1930–2000) Title: Fin d'apres-midi Edition: EA, 29/70 Medium/Technique: Woodcut Dimensions: H. 53 x W. 52 cm (woodcut) and framed H. 83 x W. 78 cm Signed: Bottom right in pencil As an artist, Fon Klement was self-taught. After a short period in which he gained recognition as a figurative painter and woodcutter, the first multi-color print sheets were created in 1960 using his characteristic technique: "relief woodcut." Recognizable formal elements gradually gave way to more abstract motifs in a sober color palette. An overview of this work was on display in 1980 at the Museum Van Bommel-Van Dam in Venlo. In the 1980s, vegetative elements, of which form and color are exuberant, made their appearance. In September 1990, new work was exhibited at the Singer Museum in Laren on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. In addition to exhibitions, his oeuvre can be seen in traveling print exhibitions. Since 1961, he has been a member of "Xylon," the international association of woodcutters, which regularly shows printmaking throughout Europe. The exhibition "Prints today in the USA," featuring an overview of printmaking by Dutch artists, including Fon Klement, toured the United States for years. During the Printmaking Biennale "Grafiek nu" in Laren in the autumn of 1990, and later at the International Printmaking Biennale in Maastricht, held during the summer of 1993, Fon Klement was awarded the audience prize. Fon Klement should be counted among the most successful artists of our time.
