Ger LATASTER (Schaesberg 1920 - Amsterdam 2012)

Dutch painter, ceramist, graphic artist, draftsman and sculptor.

Education:

Ger Lataster, is counted among the so-called “Amsterdam-Limburgers”. He started his career as a student at the Applied Arts School in Maastricht. He then went to study at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam in 1940 to 1948, this period was interrupted by the war. In 1963 the postgraduate training Ateliers '63 was established, nowadays De Ateliers. This was an initiative of Ger Lataster, Mari Andriessen, Nic Jong, Theo Mulder and Wessel Couzijn, among others.

Born in Limburg, he moved to Amsterdam and also spent a period in the US as a guest teacher at Minneapolis School of Art.

Ger Lataster is a Dutch painter who is characterized as an abstract expressionist. In the first ten years after the Second World War, Lataster's work developed from expressionistic paintings to completely abstract canvases. From 1955, Ger Lataster began to express his visual language through a thick layer of paint. This is reminiscent of the expressiveness of Karel Appel, Asger Jorn and Willem de Kooning, among others. At the end of the sixties, the figurative elements returned to Ger Lataster's work. His paint material also changed, from a thick substance Lataster made more use of thin layers of paint and finally even spray cans to shape his canvases.
