Heiner Kielholz (born April 17, 1942 in Rheinfelden) is a Swiss painter and conceptual artist.
After training as a structural draftsman, Kielholz attended the arts and crafts school in Zurich from 1962 to 1963. Together with Christian Rothacher, Hugo Suter, Max Matter, Markus Müller, Josef Herzog and Jakob Nielsen, he formed the Ziegelrain studio community in Aarau from 1967 to 1972. Intensive travel activities followed. Kielholz became a travel painter, analogous to the travel writer.
Initially, Kielholz was influenced by art informal and American abstract expressionism. After a short, stormy excursion into object art, conceptual art and Arte Povera at Ziegelrain, he eventually turned to calm, sensitive watercolor painting with a consciously chosen, critical distance from city life. On his travels to the Mediterranean, the Balkans and Turkey, he made watercolors of fleeting moments in train stations, city cafes, squares and harbours. The formats are becoming smaller and the image content more personal. Landscapes, figurative scenes and still lifes are the themes from now on. He still has numerous solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. Heiner Kielholz lives and works in Poschiavo.
