Henk Schuring (Almelo 1928–1984) was a Dutch Abstract Expressionist painter. He was a very passionate painter. Schuring also created three-dimensional work and was a graphic designer. However, he preferred improvisations with oil paint. He used varying color palettes and paid close attention to the material. He applied the oil paint in thick layers. Schuring never worked with titles. He was headstrong and had his own convictions.
This work was commissioned by my parents. He used an orange wrapper as a source of inspiration. In the past, oranges were often wrapped in thin white paper with red lettering. In my opinion, this source of inspiration cannot be directly traced back to the canvas, but it undoubtedly and inimitably inspired the artist.
Henk Schuring excelled in precisely constructed compositions and texture. For instance, we see a branch-like shape upon which a sort of bird is perched. We see a sort of tail emerging from beneath the branch. The large, clumsy body of an animal or bird seems poised to take flight. We see a sort of head with wings. The branch forms its way into the background. The black-outlined figuration is surrounded by a virtuoso painted interplay of blue tones. An expressionistic sky. The head seems to be looking at the branch, which is finding its way into the background. A scream from the head lends an expressive charge to the canvas.
Although Schuring was primarily self-taught, he has received various awards for his work. His work has been acquired by renowned institutions, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum Twente.
He taught at the AKI in Enschede, the Academy of Arts & Design.

Condition
ConditionGood
The condition of the painting is very good. However, the canvas with the frame is not completely flat. Lying on a table, it is flat; when hanging on the wall, one corner comes slightly away from the wall.
