Ian Hamilton Finlay (Nassau (Bahamas), October 28, 1925 – Edinburgh, March 27, 2006

Finlay had Scottish parents and was raised in Scotland. At the age of thirteen, at the outbreak of the Second World War, he was evacuated to the Orkney Islands. In 1942 he enlisted in the British Army.
After the war, Finlay initially worked as a sheepherder, but soon began writing short stories and poems. His first books were published: The Sea Bed and Other Stories (1958) and The Dancers Inherit the Party (1960). Several stories were filmed and broadcast by the BBC.
In 1963 Finlay published his first collection of poems Rapel, with which he achieved widespread fame. He published most of his works independently (Wild Hawthorn Press). He also started writing poems, so-called "One-Word-Poems", as inscriptions in stone, which he then left as comments in the landscape.
