Johannes Hengst Johannes Gerardus (Jan) den Hengst (Delft 1904- 1983 Amsterdam)
The painter Johannes Gerardus (Jan) Den Hengst drew and painted landscapes, cityscapes, flowers, and still lifes.
Youth and education: Johannes Gerardus (Jan) den Hengst was born in Delft on May 19, 1904. He lived and worked in Delft until 1930, then for some time in Hilversum, and from 1954 in Amsterdam. He was self-taught and painted, watercolored, and drew in an impressionistic style.
Jan was friends with the artists Jan Korthals and Jan Rijlaarsdam. Together they made many trips abroad, including to France, Spain, and Italy. In 2006, a successful exhibition of the work of the three friends was held in Hilversum.
Jan den Hengst was a member of the artists' associations Arti et Amicitiae and Sint Lucas in Amsterdam and of the Amersfoort Artists' Society 'Ploegh'.
Den Hengst participated in many group exhibitions in various locations both at home and abroad. His work is included in diverse private collections, national and international corporate collections, and government collections. He is also part of the AVRO collection, for whom he painted a commissioned artwork.
