Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht was born on September 18, 1858, in Amsterdam. His father, John Cornelis Hoynck van Papendrecht, was an accomplished draftsman and painter. Jan attended the Commercial School in Amsterdam and graduated with a diploma. On the advice of Charles Rochussen, a friend of his father, he enrolled in the winter course at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht remained in Antwerp for two years and subsequently continued his studies at the academy in Munich. He returned to Amsterdam in 1884. Illustrator Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht married Johanna Philippa van Gorkom in 1889. She was the daughter of a minister. The couple settled in Nieuwe Amstel, now called Amstelveen, in 1892. Two years later, they moved to Rheden. Hoynck van Papendrecht worked primarily as an illustrator. He created illustrations for, among others, the family magazine Eigen Haard, Eleviers Maandschrift, De Graphie, and The Daily Graphic. He gained particular fame for his military scenes. He also provided illustrations for books such as 'Onze schuttersvendels en schutterijen van vroeger en later tijd' (1908). Paintings The style of Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht shows a kinship with the Hague School artist George Hendrik Breitner. Like George Hendrik Breitner, Hoynck van Papendrecht enjoyed painting soldiers on horseback. He also produced many historical battle scenes. An example of this is the triptych dedicated to the Amsterdam militia: it depicts the militia's participation in the Siege of Naarden (1814), the Ten Days' Campaign (1831), and the final march at the beginning of the twentieth century, before the militia was disbanded.
