This work by Jan Jonges (oil on paper) is from the National Collection (see photos). View size: 51 by 33 cm. Dimensions including the modern white gallery frame: 65.5 by 49 cm. Signature: 10 (see photo).

Jan Jonges was born in Amsterdam in 1921 and was originally a pastry chef. Later, his artistic talent (drawing and making music) increasingly emerged. During the war, he was sent to work in Riga, but he escaped and had to go into hiding. He painted dishes, among other things, to support himself. In the late 1940s, he came into contact with artists such as Karel Appel, Lucebert, and Carel Willink and eventually became a member of the "Onafhankelijken" (Independents). He traveled abroad several times to work, including to Ibiza and Formentera in the late 1950s, where his love of boats, harbors, and bullfights became apparent. Jan Jonges died in 1976.

Taken from the website of a major art dealer: Amsterdam artist Jan Jonges taught himself to paint. Little is known about his life; however, his oeuvre reveals a lively interest in numerous subjects. He painted landscapes, figures, animals, still lifes, and especially scenes related to water: ships, harbors, and beach scenes. His style ranged from figurative to semi-abstract. This work reveals that Jonges also traveled abroad. Jonges painted on Formentera, an island in the Spanish Balearic Islands, among other places.

I prefer collection due to the weight and risk of glass breakage.
