Jan Korthals (1916–1972) was a well-known Dutch painter and watercolorist. He became known as one of the last great Amsterdam Impressionists. His work is primarily known for its atmospheric, lively depiction of cityscapes. This painting is a good example of that. It depicts a small street in Paris, Montmartre.
Jan Korthals was born on May 1, 1916, in Amsterdam. As a child, he was already inseparable from his sketchbook. In 1942, he decided to dedicate himself entirely to being an artist. He was strongly artistically encouraged and trained by his uncle, the painter Marie Henri Mackenzie, who was himself a pupil of the famous George Hendrik Breitner. This is clearly visible in this work as well. In addition, Korthals studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
His work reached a wide audience because major companies such as Unilever, Hoogovens, and the Senefelder printing house used his atmospheric cityscapes for their exclusive annual calendars. As a result, his images of Amsterdam and Paris hung in many Dutch living rooms in the 1950s and 1960s. Korthals was a member of the Amsterdam artists' association Sint Lucas. He died in 1972 at the age of 56, but his paintings and watercolors remain beloved by art lovers and collectors to this day.
With the renewed attention to furniture and design from the 60s and 70s, his work also comes into its own when paired with this or inspired furniture!
