The work of Utrecht painter Jan Mulder is regularly on display in New York galleries.
For several years, Jan Mulder worked on an extensive series of paintings and polyptychs themed "Am Rande der Nacht" (On the Edge of Night), based on the poem of the same name by Rainer Maria Rilke. Mulder depicts the passing of time, spatiality, the boundary between darkness and light, and their interchangeability. The theme can be interpreted as a metaphor for change. Galerie Alafran presents paintings primarily from his latest series, titled "Nachtbaum" (Night Tree) and "Im Traum wird Geschlafen" (In Dream, Sleeping), which reference poems by Paul Celan.
Jan Mulder's work has a powerful signature. He pours paint over the canvas and uses broad brushstrokes and splatters as abstract markings.
With these seemingly wild painterly gestures, he works toward balanced compositions that reflect shifts in space and light and possess a surprising poetic quality. The contrast between monochrome panels and expressively painted sections creates a visual tension. His paintings seem to merge Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting, but in fact, they arise from observations and the experience of nature; the painter, as it were, describes the act of looking in his canvases.
This work displays a powerful abstract composition in which dark planes and light zones exist in a dynamic tension. Thick layers of paint are poured and spread over each other, creating textures reminiscent of stone, ice, or weathered metal. The colors range from deep black and midnight blue to off-white and turquoise, with subtle sheen and crackle that suggest depth and layering.
