Jan Stekelenburg belonged to the first group of post-war abstract painters in our country. He was born in 1922 in Maasbree and from 1947 followed a training at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. There he was included in the group of painters who wanted to take up the fight with traditional visual art by means of abstraction and experiment. Around 1955 Stekelenburg became a member of the Liga Nieuw Beelden, an artists' association that most modernist artists and also the former Cobra members joined at that time.
