Jan Strube (Amsterdam, September 20, 1892 – Breda, November 9, 1985) was a Dutch painter. He lived most of his life in North Brabant.
After trade school, Strube attended the Quellinus School, a painting and drawing school that was the precursor to the Rietveld Academy. Around 1911, Strube visited Breda for the first time. Strube loved the city and the Brabant countryside. After the mobilization, Strube became a member of the artists' club De Onafhankelijken and later also of Arti et Amicitiae.
In the early 1920s, the couple moved to Brabant and settled in a wooden house on the edge of the Liesbos forest, near Breda. There, Strube tried to make ends meet with his lithographs, drawings, and woodcuts. After a few years, they returned to Amsterdam, where the cultural climate was more favorable. Yet, Brabant continued to draw them, and after the birth of their daughter Sonja in Amsterdam in 1927, they returned to their wooden house, now for good.
In 1933, Strube founded the Bredasche Kunstkring (Breda Art Circle) together with the artists Gerrit de Morée, Dio Rovers, and Paul Windhausen. Strube became a well-known figure in and around Breda and received an increasing number of commissions.
He became particularly well-known for his numerous lithographs depicting Brabantine farm life. The Grote Kerk (Great Church) in Breda, the Beguinage, and the small harbor at Leur were also recurring subjects. Besides these Brabantine and urban scenes, Strube also created still lifes in oil. When he died at the age of 93, he left behind a vast oeuvre.
