Jan van Geem was the son of a blacksmith in Spaarndam. He lived and worked in Spaarndam his entire life. Jan found work in a factory in Haarlem, making rollers for printing floor coverings.
Because of his artistic talent, he was accepted as an apprentice designer. He was taught by F. Drost and draftsman J.B. Kamp, and later by Kees Verweij. Van Geem developed into an independent painter. Spaarndam was his greatest source of inspiration. He immortalized the village, which he loved so much, in numerous watercolors.
Jan was a member of the artists' association KZOD, based in the Waag in Haarlem, for many years. He served as secretary from 1956 and was made a distinguished member in 1968. In 1981, he received the Gold Medal of the Order of Orange-Nassau.
