Museum Valkenburg presents a special exhibition of graphic artist Jan van Helden (1931–2006). Following a previous exhibition in color, the museum now shows both black-and-white and color works, as a tribute to his great craftsmanship in the graphic arts.

Van Helden was known for his critical, socially engaged style. In his prints, he depicted people in everyday life, often with depth and a poignant atmosphere. His work is frequently described as dark and melancholic, which is partly related to the tragic events in his personal life.

Despite personal setbacks, Van Helden continued to work tirelessly and productively. His art was influenced by, among others, Rembrandt van Rijn, Co Westerik, Pablo Picasso, and especially his teacher Hub Levigne. In his work, he incorporated his vision of the societal changes of the 1960s to the 1980s.

The museum owns a collection of 282 prints, a large part of which has been re-framed and can now be admired. A fitting tribute to an artist with a turbulent life and an impressive oeuvre.

Temporarily on display on the second floor of Museum Valkenburg.
