Johan Briedé (1885–1980), also known as JB de Chateauroux, was a Dutch graphic designer from Rotterdam. In 1910, he received a grant from Professor Arend Willem Maurits Odé to study at the Amsterdam School of Applied Arts. Two years later, he began classes at the Haarlem School of Applied Arts, where his teachers included Chris Lebeau, Willem van Konijnenburg, and Geraldo Abraham Brender à Brandis. Briedé was multidisciplinary, skilled in drawing, painting, lithography, and etching.
He drew inspiration for his artwork during his travels through Europe, visiting various countries such as Sweden, Spain, Mallorca, and France. Nature, and especially trees, dominates his artwork. From his boat in the Hilversum canal, he studied aquatic plants.
He worked as a freelance artist for various companies, publishers and magazines, creating several bindings, covers and illustrations for WL & J. Brusse's Uitgeversmaatschappij in Rotterdam.
Briedé was a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Roermond and later taught at various schools in Rotterdam, The Hague, Haarlem, and Amsterdam. He married Mary Grietje Brandsma in 1912, and the couple moved several times to the Netherlands. Briedé died in 1980 after a very productive life.
