Johannes ('Johan') Hemkes , born in Schalsum (Friesland) April 3, 1894, died in Bilthoven December 3, graphic artist, draftsman, etcher, lithographer and secondary school teacher.
-Education: After studying at the 'National Normal School for Teeken Teachers' he became a schoolmaster. During the mobilization for the First World War, he received drawing lessons at the Bik en Vaandrager institute in The Hague. After obtaining the MO drawing certificate in 1919, he became a drawing teacher at the Rijks-HBS in Ter Apel in 1921.
From 1921 to 1966 he made woodcuts, watercolors, lithographs and more than four hundred etchings. He also devoted himself to music and played the violin in various ensembles.
-Subjects: He mainly made landscapes (the lakes in Friesland), cityscapes, village views, forest views and still lifes (mushrooms).
In 1966 Hemkes moved with his wife to Bilthoven and devoted himself entirely to art. In those years he significantly expanded his oeuvre. Etching dominated his life until old age.
Johan Hemkes was a member of the artists' associations It Fryske Boun fan Kunstners, Arti et Amicitiae, St. Lucas, De Ondependenten and De Grafische. As a member of these associations, he participated in exhibitions at home and abroad.
