John Chapman Lewis (Amerikaans, 1920-1994) was een prominent lid van de ‘Washington School’ (begin jaren 60 ook bekend als ‘The Washington School of Color’). Zijn schilderijen zijn lyrisch en abstract, geen voorstellingen van de natuur op zich, maar het oproepen van rust en genoegen met bijna mystieke emotionele eigenschappen kenmerkend voor de natuur. Zijn laatste grote expositie was tijdens The Philips Collection in 1973. Een deel van zijn werk werd tentoongesteld in Bussum, Fountain Art, ‘Naoorlogse abstracten’, juni 2012.
