Julius von Kaan-Albest, March 8, 1874 in Munich - c. 1942 in Berlin was a painter and illustrator.

According to Thieme/Becker, Julius von Kaan-Albest was a nephew of the sculptor von Pfretzschner and a cousin of the sculptor Artur Kaan. In 1894 he graduated from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich and was trained in Munich in 1895/96 by Anton Ažbe. From 1897 he worked on illustrations for the history of the Austrian 42nd Infantry Regiment, and from 1900 he served as an active Austrian officer himself, often being assigned to do portraits and other commissions. In 1901 he created the colossal painting The Battle of Wagram, which ended up in the Theresienstadt City Museum, and in 1909 he painted Archduke Karl at the Battle of Wagram. In the years 1909/1910 he taught at the cadet school in Marburg in Styria, from 1910 to 1914 at the cadet school in Vienna. There he attended the art academy from 1911 to 1914. His teachers included R. Backer and H. Heller. In 1915 he worked as a war painter on the Austrian fronts during the First World War. In addition to combat photos, portraits were also created at this time. His painting The Austrian Army Crossing the Italian Border, May 1916 was hung in Archduke Joseph Ferdinand's palace on Schwarzenbergplatz in Vienna. About 20 pictures became the property of the Vienna Army Museum.

From 1919 Julius von Kaan-Albest worked in Tyrol, where he lived in Steinach am Brenner, and took part in numerous exhibitions. Between 1921 and 1924 he painted the monumental painting Last Great Homage in Tyrol, Innsbruck 1838 for the Innsbruck Hofburg. A number of works by Kaan-Albests became the property of the Kaiserjägermuseum and the Kaiserschützenmuseum in Innsbruck. A painting entitled Forum Romanum was owned by the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich. A triptych called Praga belonged to the "Schlaraffia" in Marburg. After the First World War, Julius von Kaan-Albest spent his winters in Berlin, to which he apparently later moved entirely. In Berlin he lived at Fichtestrasse 11 in Steglitz.Julius von Kaan-Albest died during the Second World War.TEXT WIKIPEDIA .
