Kees Spermon (Rotterdam 1941 – Saint-Saveur-de-Montagut 1992) was a painter and printmaker. That this artist, who passed away too soon, was a master of his craft is clear: trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, he won the prestigious Royal Grant for Free Painting in 1969. For many years, he taught graphic techniques at the Academy where he himself had received his training. Although his preference lay with drawing and graphic work, Spermon was awarded the Royal Grant for Free Painting twice shortly after his academy training in Rotterdam, in the early 1970s. The human figure constantly recurs in Spermon's drawings, prints, and paintings. In his earlier prints, for which there is now increasing demand again, figures emerge from a dense fabric of nervous lines. At any moment, they can disappear back into their identically drawn background like a strange confluence of scratches. Spermon exhibited regularly at galleries in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. His prints were also exhibited at international retrospectives. Work by Kees Spermon has now been included in the collections of, among others, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, the Gemeentemuseum The Hague, and the Gemeentemuseum Arnhem.
