Louis Schanker was an artist, painter, printmaker and sculptor. In the mid-1930s, he was in the vanguard of artists who were experimenting with different art forms in various media.
"Mr. Schanker, throughout a career that spanned more than 50 years, worked simultaneously in painting, printmaking and carved sculpture, freely transferring the techniques of one medium to another. As a painter, he was best known for his work of the 30s and 40s done in a semiabstract mode that was influenced by European modernism."
Schanker was the son of Sam and Fannie Schanker, born July 20, 1903 in New York City.
Schanker was married twice. His first wife was Matilde Levy, whom he married December 9, 1932 in New York City. He and Matilde traveled to Le Havre, France, in November 1933. This marriage ended in divorce. His second marriage, which took place in Jamaica in December 1960, was to the singer and actress Libby Holman. The couple lived at "Tree Tops," one of Libby's homes. where Louis maintained a studio. Libby's first husband was Z. Smith Reynolds, the tobacco heir. Her second husband was the Broadway actor Ralph Holmes.
Libby died after committing suicide in 1971.
Louis Schanker died May 8, 1981 in Stamford, Connecticut
