Artist: Marc Chagall

Medium: lithographic poster, 1987

Dimensions: 30.25 x 20.75 in, 76.8 x 52.7 cm

Classic poster paper - perfect condition A+

This 1987 exhibition poster, made for an exhibition of works by Marc Chagall who traveled through Japan (Tokyo, Yamagata, Nagoya and Gunma), was printed in Paris by the Atelier Mourlot which printed most of Chagall's lithographs.

This image was chosen because Marc Chagall had illustrated one of the greatest love stories of all time: the Greek legend of Daphnis and Chloé. The artist's poetic and emotional vision truly captures the empathy and romance of this story like no other artist could. The first project took almost six years and included 42 original lithographs. Enamored with the story, Chagall made several trips to Greece, accompanied by his wife, to work on preparatory sketches on Lesvos, the island where the publishing house Tériade was born.

This poster was reproduced shortly after Chagall's death by master printer Charles Sorlier, who was his closest collaborator with Mourlot, but who had also become his most trusted friend.
