Statement by Mattie Schilders: 'Understanding the universal laws of everything I observe regarding the landscape was and is a necessary fact for me. An analysis of this has now gripped me for almost my entire painting life. '

Well, when I first met Mattie and his work, a year ago now, I was captivated by his idea about the fortunes of our earth. His view of the world, translated into and through his work, radiated great intensity. A painting in which the artist wants to testify about his admiration for the world. Not just the world around him, but above all a self-invented derivative of everything he has seen, heard and experienced. Mattie is a romantic. Time and again he seems to succeed in observing and analyzing the landscape from ever-changing points of view. The result is an ever-progressive development. New thoughts continually arise regarding the method of representation. These then lead to the next step in imagining it.
