MENNO BAUER Menno Bauer was born February 13, 1949 in Haarlem Has been working as a visual artist in Stompetoren since 1979 Menno Bauer and the beauty of perfect movement The film "Number 14" was once made about Johan Cruyff. It portrays the world's most famous footballer in a very poetic way: slow-motion images and romantic music support the idea that football at this level is actually an art form. The visual artist Menno Bauer wholeheartedly agrees. The paintings that this artist from North Holland makes are about the beauty of movement. His source of inspiration is not the football field, but the Stopera stage: the similarities with the Cruyff film lie in the use of music and movement. The difference is that a ballet performance cannot be won 4-1. Bauer is interested in the movement of dancers. Hans van Maanen's performances in particular meet the requirements. 'In my paintings', says Bauer, 'I set everything in motion. I want to make the figures in the painting dance, I want to show that everything is alive and full of tension. Actually, I'm dusting off existing images.' Not only Van Maanen's ballet performances, but also famous paintings from art history contain scenes that Bauer breathes new life into on his canvases. The reason is simple: in a painting everything stands still because everything is painted. And yet you can introduce the suggestion of movement into it. The challenge is to make that illusion completely convincing.
