Paul Rollman (1924-2014) was born on May 11, 1924, in Amsterdam's Jordaan district (Elandsstraat). He was a real wheeler-dealer. He was a well-known painter, but also a singer, horse dealer, and writer. Paul used anything to make money; he said, "I always had a few tenners more than anyone else." After three years of school, he quit and, at twelve, became an independent entrepreneur. When the war broke out, Paul Rollman was 15. He saw the Germans enter the city on Rozengracht, and the next day was his birthday. They lived on Ten Catestraat, and Paul became an orderly (messenger) but navigated every loophole. He was bold, but not "stupidly bold," as Paul himself puts it. On Nieuwe Kerkstraat (known as Joden Kerkstraat during the war), he opened a studio where he produced a huge number of small paintings and painted tiles, which were in great demand. Because he was the only Christian, he could afford a lot and survived the war.
In simple plastic frame.
