René Portocarrero A Cuban painter whose abstract, figurative contours and fields of color depicted tropical nature and Cuban women. Portocarrero's paintings are largely influenced by the work of Wifredo Lam. René Portocarrero was born in 1912 in the El Cerro neighborhood of Havana. He began painting at a young age and at 14 entered the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts. Because he had a strong temperament and could not adapt to this apprenticeship, he left the institution and began working independently. His work was first exhibited at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Havana. In 1939, Portocarrero was a professor at the Institut d'Art Free de la Paix y Sculpture, under the direction of Eduardo Abela. The artist traveled through Haiti, Europe, and the United States, where he opened an exhibition at the Julian Levy Gallery in New York in 1945. He also created numerous murals and ceramics. He painted tirelessly since his youth and never planned his work. Spontaneously, he had no idea what he would create until the brush touched the canvas. Portocarrero's works are held in the permanent collections of the Museums of Modern Art of: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, New York, and San Francisco; the National Gallery of Canada; Bellas Artes, Caracas; the Milwaukee Art Center, Pan American Union in Washington; Modern Art Museum of Paris; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Kunstmuseum Indianapolis; Bellas Artes, Montevideo; Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires; Instituto de Arte Contemporaneo, Lima, Peru; and the National Museum in Havana. The artist died on April 7, 1985 in Havana.
